Website header image

I then wanted to choose an appropriate picture for my header. I have chosen a black and white picture to fit the theme of a newspaper style. This is not my image, this is a secondary resource that I have just put there for now so I can overlook the variety of images that work well with my websites format. The idea for my header is that I want it to stand out as this will be the first focus point my audience look at when they are taken to my website page at the top. If the attraction is not there then my readers may choose not to scroll down and read on.

I wanted to find a image that was Black and White as it suits my colour scheme really well. My aim is that my header changes everyday due to the different events that are going on. I will use my main story headline image as the picture placed as the header and it is the most important thing of the day. I will make it so that the header image changes everyday to suit the current environmental surroundings.

Logo

I wanted to create a logo that was clearly visible and straight to the point. I feel I have successfully done this as I have not only included the name of my newspaper but I have included a logo image behind the text. This gives a psychology effect to my target audience due to the image is a seagull, therefore it is psychotically aiming at a audience from Whitstable.

I have used Adobe Fireworks to edit my header. When updating a header to my website it will only allow me to add just a image, not text. I wanted my logo to be at the top of the page so I thought why not compromise them together. I took the base picture and turned it into a background image and placed my logo design that I have created and placed it on the top right on the image. I feel the top right was the best place to put the image as it is the direction that the audiences eyes will be drawn to as that is the way the trees are being swung by the wind. However I feel the logo looks too subtle, I want it to be more BOLD so my audience know exactly what online news page they are on.

Websites URL

I want my my website to be easily recognised and accessed. I will rename my URL to:

My audience will be able to access this easily, the site is clearly named on my newspapers front cover and have also stated it on my billboard. The more people see it being written on forms of media the more people are likely to visit the site. All the conventions I have created enhance one another's advertisements just putting parts of one another on each product.

I am able to do this by going to the top left hand corner of my website and clicking on customize.

Then there is a column on the left, I then click on settings and it will take me to this page below. It  now enables me to change the URL name to whatever I want. My newspaper name is Whitstable periodical so I want to promote this product as they are connected together.

Planning

Planning
Firstly, I will need to find a site that I can create a website on in order for me to produce my two hyperlinked pages from the website. I searched hard for different website layouts and finally found one that was perfect for a news layout.
The site I used to produce my news website was called: www.coachingnewbies.com

Once I had access to the site I was then able to login to my user account whenever I wanted to produce my news website. I then needed to choose a theme layout that suited my newspaper theme style. To choose a theme I would click on the button 'local news' top left hand corner and it will come up with lots of options and I would then click on 'themes'. I chose a simple black and white style however I was able to put buttons along the top row across the page which is what I wanted. I chose a black and white background because I feel it was aimed more at my target audience rather than lots of bright colours all over the page.

Second Hyperlink

Website Research

I went onto a local online news so I was able to get some ideas for my second hyperlink to go on my website. I have gone onto Kent online as it has a lot of information and hyperlinks which will help me.

Researching newspaper websites

Analysing different newspaper websites

In order to design my own two hyperlinked pages for my newspapers website I will need to explore the internet for some online websites to get inspiration in order for me to produce my own version for my newspaper.

Below I have a local online news, I am able to see what it includes and what makes it stand out. Kent online has included lots of different dimentions such as:

  • Story lines
  • Newspaper name
  • Images
  • Video clips
  • Many tabs (buttons)
  • Logo
  • Competitions
  • Contact details
  • The date
  • Search Bar
  • Weather
  • Sport
I will take into account as to what Kent online have included on their home page which I have provided a print screen for.

I will also need to consider using a colour scheme for my web page so it looks formal and well presented so it is catered for the target audience I want to attract. Here Kent Online have used a Blue and white theme. Two to three colors is usually enough, otherwise it tends to be too much and not very clear and visible. A way of linking the colours together is by using master heads and titles. On this website they have also outlined the images in shade of blue. This is important as they colours link the whole page together.
Online Daily Mail

Similarities

The similarities between the two online web pages is that they both have their newspaper titles in the same place with bold black writing. Both online news pages use the buttons along the top in a row as a way of going onto different hyperlinked pages of different topics. In my task I will need to produce a online news web page and have two hyper links that link to the home page. I will produce the buttons along the rows like these two online sites have done so I am able to use two of them as hyper links for my coursework. Both sites have used a similar colour scheme of blue and black writing which a white contrasted background which enthasises the writing. The reason why they may have chosen these two colours as they come across as a sense of serious, whereas if they used lots of bright colours with not much layout that it may be portrayed as childlike and attract the wrong target audience.

Differences

The differences between the two online web pages is that they're format of pictures and writing are in a completely different style. I think the way in which the Kent online have structured their columns come across as crowded. There is so much to look at once and is all crammed in together. I will consider this when producing my own website when choosing my format. The mail online is more spacious and easier to read and visualize however the advertisement in the master head of the home page takes up way too much room, if people go on the mail online website they will want to see news not advertisements taking up 1/3 of the page.  Mail online use lots of images to form a collage to emphasise the headline as to what has happened whereas the Kent online has use a variety of multimedia and have used images and a video.

Newspaper Evaluation

Newspaper Evaluation

Front cover-

As a whole I am very pleased with my newspaper as it followed similar conventions to other local newspapers which gave mine a sense of realism. It was important throughout the whole process I kept going back over my research to see what I needed to include and what not to include.

I have given questionnaires out to my fellow classmates to see whether they feel I could have improved anywhere. I will write my feedback on my evaluation questions.

Second Page-

I feel as though I have successfully included the crucial essential elements within a second page. I found the second page a lot harder to look for in my research as the front cover is most important so I had to use my own resources for this. I have included many advertisements and ' see pages ??' to keep my audience wanting to read on.

Hot Spot

FreeBies

When producing my newspaper I have included a hot spot. This allows me to not only attract my target audience but to also introduce a new audience. For example if someone couldn't choose between my paper and another local newspaper, they may look at my newspaper and see that it comes with a free product and choose mine because it has more to offer. This not only gets the newspaper more recognised it also will make the newspaper more popular and sell ore copies. Although the freebee does cost a bit, it is 100% worth it as the amount of copies that are sold turn into a increase in profit forgetting about the small cut into purchasing the freebies.

Bar Codes

From looking into bar codes I have actually gained knowledge that from my research bar codes are not usually put on the front cover of a newspaper, they are usually on the back. I did not know this before I researched this, this shows how important research actually is otherwise I would have created a bar code to go on the front cover of my newspaper when actually newspapers don't usually have this. I want to make my newspaper as realistic as possible which is why I have left the bar code out of the front cover due to my strong research.

As you can see in the image above, Whitstable Time do not have a bar code on the front cover of their newspaper. The publisher put the bar code on the back page. Although it does not have a bar code it does however include the price at the top of the page so the reader knows how much they are buying it for.

Article Writing

Letter Alignment

From my research I have noticed that typically at the beginning of every article the letter is bigger and bolder than the other letters. This stands out a lot and influences the reader to read on after being drawn to the big letter to continue reading the article. I done this by right clicking on the letter, change text, drop cap, then chose what style I wanted to have my article main letter look like.

Structure

I want to try out a variety of ways as to how the headline should be on the page. I have put a basic article there just for now just show how I want my layout to be. I have put the price in the right hand corner so it is separate from everything else. I feel that the FREEBIE does not stand out as much at the bottom so I will adjust thins and move all my content around in order to change this.

Newspaper Name

I have decided to name my local newspaper 'Whitstable Periodical'. Periodical stands for regular publications which is perfect for what I want my newspaper name to represent. As overall it means Whitstable regular publications; implying that it is not only a local newspaper, it also is regularly published to update and inform their target audience.

Original logo I designed:

Improved logo design:

Representation

What does the bird represent?

The bird represent the theme of Whitstable because it is very known for their seagulls in this specific location. I wanted my logo to be recognizable so my target audience will instantly look at the image and think Whitstable.

Second Page

Designing my second page of my newspaper 'Whitstable Periodical'

By going through my research, I have planned together a layout  so I can overlook how I want my second page to look like. I have used the rule of third in order for the page to have a format to present neatly to my audience. If I was to avoid using the rule of third then this can put my piece in danger as all sections could be all over the place.

Finding the right headline

Finding a headline

First I will need to decide on a headline for my newspaper article.  As I need to focus on an event that is in the local area I will need to think of a headline that will attract the local audience. It will need to have an impact on the audience in order for individuals to be intrigued and drawn to the newspaper. The headline is one of the most important parts on the newspaper as it is how individuals judge whether to buy that newspaper juxtaposed to other competitor newspapers.

My newspaper that I am designing is based upon the local news within Whitstable. Whitstable have many events as it is a tourist attraction town and is very popular. I have decided to do the headline about a protest on why Whitstable do NOT have any Christmas lights this year.  Many people are thoroughly disappointed as usually every year someone comes to Whitstable and turns on the lights (usually a celebrity). This takes away the excitement for the town as the lights are important to individuals at Christmas. I will ring up the local council to find out why exactly there aren’t any lights up as they should have been up by now. There has been talks about that we will be having lights up but they are stuck in china but this however could be a false allegation so I will find out why exactly when I ring the council.

I will make sure that my headline is BIG and BOLD in order to stand out on the page.

For example this is a quote I will use based on the Headline. By saying ‘we’ it automatically gives a sense of connection to readers as you are including them therefore it is impacting them so they will want to read about it.

‘we want our Christmas lights back’

Second Page local newspaper Examples

Second Pages are much more harder to find on a secondary resource basis, this is because the main headline story is on the front page, therefore being more important than the second page. When creating my second page I will need to think about what conventions are used and how they use smaller stories and more of them.

Pricing of the newspaper

How much are Newspapers?

I wanted to investigate how much newspaper were to buy. I wanted to make sure that my newspaper is not over priced otherwise my target audience will not be interested in buying my newspaper if it is too expensive. I will calculate the average price and discover a cost that is suitable for my local newspaper.

This list has allowed me to overlook all the different newspaper prices to have more of a understanding in how much they cost. I have calculated the average price which is 50p. I thought that this is a fair price and customers will think this is a reasonable price to pay.

Theories

Theories used in Media

There are many theories recognised in the media, these can become very useful as I may be able to relate them to my own tasks.

Tzvetan Todorov- He suggests that there is a narrative which can be used in a variety of medias. He believes there are five stages. These being:

  1. Equilibrium
  2. Disruption
  3. Realisation
  4. Reparation
  5. Restoration of Equilibrium

Narratives

What is Narrative?

This is an event that is put together and presented to an audience by a sequence. It is not the actual text, it is how it has been put together. This will be used when I produce my newspaper front cover and second page because I will not only be putting together the text I will want there to have a meaning behind it and show why I have chosen to put certain aspects. I will show what techniques and methods I will approach when producing my newspaper to show my narrative throughout the process.

What Front Covers usually include

Masthead- This is known as the newspaper's name. It is the easiest way to identify a newspaper so it is important that this masthead does stand out. This is also an essential part of branding.

Slogan- A 'catchphrase' summing up the newspaper's philosophy or unique selling point.

Puffs or blurbs- Colour bands to attract readers to stories that can suggest that is on a page within the newspaper or coming soon.

Headlines- This is for the most important stories and would be the largest typeface on the page. This is usually what sells the newspaper as a whole by their main story.

Sub-heads- looks similar to the headline but is a smaller typeface which explains a bit more about the story.

Lead Story- Audience heads straight to the lead story and will want to read all about it and is highlighted as being the most interesting.

By-line- journalist's name, can include a photo.

Secondary Lead- Exactly the same as the main story except it is less important.

Photographs- They can illustrate the lead story or they could be there to that the reader looks further into the newspaper for example see page 5 (with a picture).

Captions- They can be just as meaningful as the photographs as it gives readers more knowledge based upon the picture.

Menu- This is a table of contents that shows what is in each section and where to find the articles inside the newspaper. This is usually referred to as a contents page.

Small/line ad- no images, this just contains text only.

Display Ad- Includes a picture

Front cover Conventions

Newspaper Front Cover

There are four goals a newspaper needs to achieve in order to get the best response for its final outcome.

  1.  It is important to reinforce the newspaper's identity through easily recognisable style features. When I discover my format and style I will need to keep to this on the regular publications in order for the newspaper to be recognised in order for it to become more popular. Also, making the logo on the front cover is crucial as images are a way of catching peoples attention without them even reading a thing.
  2. Attract your readers. Know your target audience.
  3. Show your newspapers attitude towards the news of the day. All newspaper have different opinions and readers like to see different sides of opinions so they can access and evaluation what they think about the article themselves. This can be done in a variety of ways such as Using a strong headline and adjusting it to the newspapers thought on the article. For example, I have looked further into this and I gathered up a variety of different newspapers all on the same story of Ed Miliband's father. Not one newspaper was the same. This just goes to show that all newspapers have different opinions and you want yours to have an opinion.
  4. Include stories, exclusives and better coverage of main stories than other newspapers. Beat your competitors and put in that extra something to stand out.

Theme

In order to choose my main headline story I will need to choose a theme.

My newspaper is currently being produced in December time. This gives me a variety of headlines as to what I can pick for my audience. This theme will be my main story. In december there are lots of events going on such as, christmas, lights, heating costs, carols. However I didn't want to do just a typical christmas newspaper. I wanted to think more dramatic. I chose to do about the Weather. Strong Winds are currently taking over Whitstable and everyone wants to know the current situation.

There is known to be three different types of narrative codes that were argued by Barthes in 1974. These being: Action codes, Enigmatic codes and symbolic codes. Out of the three media texts I personally feel I will action codes within my article headline. I wanted something dramatic to draw the audience into the narrative; with damaged buildings and fall trees in roads to create an illusion to the audience that they must read on.

I have created a small newspaper collage so I am able to compare the different weather headlines to see what ones catch audience's attention the most. I personally feel that the bottom right image is the most boldest and strong meaningful. It gives a more dramatic vibe to the newspaper and intrigues you to read on more about the article. This is exactly what I want when addressing my target audience. I will need to think of a headline that is strong and makes my audience feel they are involved in the headline.

What Local Newspapers Front Covers Include

I have already researched the conventions of what is usually included on a front cover of a newspaper however this is more so directed at a local newspaper rather than just any newspaper.

Local newspaper-
  • The main story is always essential.
  • Local Advertisements throughout the newspaper.
  • Conventional house style- this can mean the colours and format of the newspaper.
  • A large image for the main story
  • Captions to go with the story
  • Columns of text either side of the story.
Although these are basic elements to a front cover of a newspaper, they are straight to the point and what I will make sure I will look out for.

Local newspapers

Local newspapers

For my task that is set I will be producing a local newspaper for my target audience. In order for me to do this, I have previously researched into popular newspapers so I can see why they are so successful by what layout and format they use to I am able to gather ideas from this.  Now to gain more knowledge as to how local newspapers are represented I am going to analyse some newspapers from my local area.

An example of a local newspaper is the Whitstable Times.

This is a local newspaper that I will anyalyse and look into. This newsaper has got a big masterhead at the top for the title and advertisements. The important element to a newspaper is that the title for the newspaper will always be the same for everyone as it is a way in how the newspaper is identified. Here the newspaper has used BIG BOLD text with 'Whitstable' text being larger than 'times'.  Also, alongside in the same font but in non capitals is the headline. This is the most important part on the front cover as it is the attraction to the page to draw your audience in.

This newspaper has used a few images however the headline picture is the largest as this should be the part of the page that stands out the most. If there are too many images on the page then all the attention will be taken away from the headline.

Surveys

Research into more specific newspaper target audience

From these results I am able to identify newspapers target audience and who I will aiming at. The most popular age group is over 45 year olds as the younger generation have started to use the internet to find out news. Facebook and twitter have become global and thousands of teenages are using the social network daily, adverts and news have started to be posted on people's time lines, pages so they are able to access the news as well. When I am producing my newspaper I will need to produce it in a style that attracts an older generation as they are more likely to read it.

The Daily Mail's Front covers

Front covers

For my final task I am creating a front cover and a content page. I will gain knowledge from my research so I am able to create my productions. The 'Daily Mail' sells millions of copies a day, I need to identify how. Below is a copy of a 'Daily Mail' front cover.

Whilst doing my research looking and analysing the different styles of the Daily main newspaper i have noticed that they have a set structure in which they stick to. For example they use the strips at the top of the page as banners and use a colourful background just on the strip to make it stand out. They do this is nearly all of their newspapers. This approach has obviously been successful with their viewers. The main story lines are always in Black bold writing. Captions are underlined to make them stand out against the large text alongside them.

In comparison between the two newspapers they tend to change the placement in which they put the main image on the front cover. They use the line of three rule which organised the composition of the pictures. They are either placed on the right hand side as a tall portrait picture or they are either in the center of the bottom of the page as a landscape image. I will need to consider this when creating my newspaper, organising where my images will go and what way looks best.

Newspaper Research

Research

My aim is to produce a local newspaper front cover, and contents page. In order for me to do this I will not only look at local newspapers but I will also look at huge, well known newspapers so I am able to identify what aspects work well and who are their target audience. It is important that I do not just jump ahead and start creating my newspaper, first I need to research all about different newspaper articles and observe why they are so successful and what makes them stand out from their competitors. Every bit of information will help me during this task as it will help build ideas in order for me to create my very own local newspaper.

First I am going to look into the larger UK newspapers. Although these are not local newspaper it is still a good idea to gather information about them, such as their styles, format, colour schemes, producers, target audiences and so on. I am going to look into further detail on the well know newspaper, 'Daily Mail'. My aim is to find out why this newspaper is so well know? why is this newspaper so successful? This will be me inspiration when creating mine.

The Daily Mail

General information
The Daily mail is the second biggest selling newspapers in the UK and I want to find out why. It is a middle-market tabloid and is owned by the Daily Mail and General Trust. Depending on how much money the newspaper makes depends on what market each newspaper will be categorised in.The daily mail was first published in 1896 by Lord Northcliffe.Daily Mails current newspaper competitors are 'The Sun'.  When the daily mail first began it was originally classed in the lower middle class. This included a low retail price however it was successfully the first newspaper in the UK to sell a million copies a day.

Gender Audience

It is stereo-typically said that men read the newspaper more than women. Although the daily mail included many things in their newspaper, in order for them to attract both genders which would bring them a wider audience; catering for both men and women. They did this by including competitions and crosswords in. These small things slowly appealed more to the other gender and statistically it was the first paper to provide features especially for women. This is the only British newspaper whose readership is more than 50 percent female, and man at 53 percent.

How many copies it sells

In April 2012, the daily mail had on average a circulation of 1,991,275 copies. As I have previously said that it is the second largest British newspapers which are such a big success. Throughout my research I am going to find out why this newspaper is so successful and what they do differently to the other competitors. Each month their website has over 100 million visitors on their website.

Home

Welcome to my blog,

I have created this blog for my A2 Media Studies coursework. I was given a selection of questions to choose from, I eliminated the questions as to asking myself: does my school have the appropriate technology for the task? Am I able to present my skills to their best abilities whilst also learning new techniques along the way?

I chose not to do film making due to my school not having many cameras and enough computers with the appropriate software on in which I would need to use on a regular basis for filming the product therefore I would not be able to perform to my best abilities and may corrupt my time consumption as it is important I hit them deadlines.
After looking over the questions I have decided I want to focus on newspapers for my final piece. This allows me to expand my knowledge from last year when studying magazine; it will be interesting discovering the similarities and differences of the variety of elements within both products. This will help with my evaluation due to learning a lot about the media and how it is publitised to their target audience. I chose not to produce a magazine again this year as I personally feel that a newspaper will be more challenging for me as I have already produced a magazine last year. I will be able to discover a deeper understanding about cultural differences and what genres are usually suited to local newspapers.

This was the question that I followed to produced my work:

The first two pages of an original local newspaper (if done as a group task, each member of the group to produce an individual edition of the newspaper, following the same house style), together with two of the following three options:

• a billboard poster for the newspaper;

• a radio advertisement for the newspaper;

• two hyperlinked pages from the paper’s website.

For my A2 coursework I am going to design two pages for a local newspaper, alongside that two hyper-linked pages from the papers' website and a billboard to advertise my newspaper to the public. I will encourage the ancillary tasks to be seen as advertisements.  I am then able to reach a wider audience by attracting customers to purchase my local newspaper that I will be producing. By creating my own newspaper this will then challenge my magazine skills and see if I can apply any techniques to the newspaper; this will give me the opportunity/experience in becoming a journalist in the future by learning a deeper understanding about the media.

Colours and Tones

Colours and tones

In billboards they usually use colour to show connotations which connects to the audiences emotions. This is done by the meaning of either a symbol or colour that has been places on the picture which leaves a hidden meaning. The background on a billboard would need to be either a bold simple colour so that the writing on top stands out and grabs the audiences attention as the writing can be the most important piece on the image if it is guiding them to what it is. A popular background on billboards tend to either be black or white so that way they can put the opposite colour black or white on top of the background so that the writing is striking and is visible. Although black and white is popular, primary colours are also popular background colours as they tend to have connotation. For example if the background on a billboard was blue; this can give a calm vibe to their audience. The colour all depends on what vibe and feel you are presenting to your audience. If I was to create a billboard on a danger hazard i would use black and red contrasted together as they are clearly visible colours over one another and they both represent danger.

The billboard that has been represented here is advertising a skin care product is has used two basic colours which contrast well together. Blue represents calm which can create a nice and smooth atmosphere. This billboard has been cleverly designed when in use in the day light. There is an outline of a water drop which shows that is a pure product for the skin. The sky colour fits perfectly in this water droplet cut out; engaging not only the audience to the billboard but by connecting the sky to create an illusion. Illusions are more effective in billboards as they get a lot more notice. I think it was a good idea that this billboard only has two colours as the billboards shows that less can be more.

This billboard only has the product on with four simple words. This is effective in a way that everything is easily seen and there isn't too much to be read to complicate things. This billboard shows exactly what is advertising and you know straight away what they are trying to advertise which is important. Above in billboard colour schemes it is usually the best idea to contrast colours so they are easily visible to the public eye. Here there is black writing against the white background so the four simple words are clear, strong and bold.

3D Billboards

3D Billboards

These are represented in the same locations as 2D billboards however 3D billboards look a lot different due to their texture of the billboard.

As you can see this looks like a 2D billboard however it is a 3D due to the fact that the image comes out the size range of the billboard whcih creates an effect. It is effective to the audinece because it does not look like an average billboard as the imagine stands out as it is shaped around the picture, not the picture shaoped around the billboard.

Above is also a 3D billboard however this billboard uses another object to connect to the billboard to create an extraudinay effect. I think this is a really great way to advertise a brand as everyone is drawn to the billboard as they are so amazed with it. People usually instantly know what it is for with billboards like this as they use objects to hand know what it is with excitement.

Types of Billboard

What Types of Billboards are there?

Many people use billboards as a way of advertising their product. This draws people’s attention into looking at what your product is. There are many different billboards. There are 2D billboards and even 3D billboards. Electric billboards are becoming more people as the technology is gradually increasing over the years and becoming more popular than paper based billboards as they aren’t as exciting and doesn’t draw as much attention. Billboards can advertise many things such as new movies coming out, magazines, newspapers and many others. I found a video on You Tube which shows some effective billboards that have become well known from being quirky and different from all the rest.

2D Billboards

2D Billboards

2D Billboards are used all over the world. They are more of an older way of advertising as in this day and age there is a lot of technology used now. The good thing about 2D billboards is that they are what they are, no confusions or complications. 2D Billboards focus a lot of colour contrasting as it is a way in which the 2D billboards can stand out against the 3D one's. They are a flat surface, usually known as a poster. They can be any size.

Here they have used their market research and found out the programmes most popular characters in the programme to attract the audiences attention as they will want to see their favourite character up there. They have been put against a black background to stand out, which as you can see has worked well. On top of the background they have used White bold text saying 'THE END'.
